House History

Named for Winifred (1889-1948). A native of Ames, Tilden had professional training at Harvard, Columbia and the California Dancing School. She was the founder and for 40 years identified with the University program of physical education for women. By her enthusiasm and understanding of basic needs, she built a strong foundation of curriculum, staff, and facilities on which the department continues to develop.
