House History
Named for Anna Lawther (1872-1957). Lawther served on the Board of Education (Board of Regents) from 1921 to 1941 showing a strong supporter of the residence halls an was interested in ways to finance them. A graduate of Bryn Mawr College in 1897, she was an early advocate of women’s suffrage being a leader in Iowa and nationally. She was Iowa’s first Democratic national committee women and was a 1920 delegate to the Democratic convention in San Francisco. She was the first woman to deliver a convocation address at the State University of Iowa in 1949.
