Advertising in the Residence Halls
Groups are encouraged to promote official ISU events, membership, and activities for their organizations. Items may be distributed through house mailboxes which are located at each Hall Desk (see below).
Only Department of Residence staff and hall/house council representatives are permitted to hang flyers/posters in the residence halls and on-campus apartments. Hall Desks will accept flyers and posters from registered ISU student organizations through the Student Activities approval /distribution process.
You are not permitted to
- post flyers or advertisements on doors, windows, poles, bulletin boards, or leave them around DOR halls;
- go door-to-door in the residence halls;
- locate student staff or hall/house council members in their rooms and give them flyers to post/distribute;
- use staff mailboxes to distribute information;
- without permission, attend house meetings to promote groups or events.
Advertisements distributed or posted in violation of this policy may be removed with the cost of removal charged to the responsible individual or organization. Questions? Call the Residence Life Office at (515) 294-6428.
House Mailboxes - Each house has a mailbox located at the hall desk. Most mailboxes are only deep enough for standard 8.5”X11” paper so larger items should be rolled with rubber bands so they fit. Only one copy per house will be accepted. The chart below indicates how many flyers each desk will accept. You are highly encouraged to plan ahead and distribute flyers at least 10 days in advance of your event. If your items are submitted too late, there is no guarantee they will be posted.

Hall Council - Each hall has a council that meets regularly. You are encouraged to contact the Hall Councils and ask to speak at their weekly meetings. These councils are made up of representatives from each house in the hall, so this would is a good opportunity to promote your group / activity. A list of Hall Council meetings and contact information is available at the Residence Life Office – 1203 Friley Hall.
IRHA - The Inter-Residence Hall Association has a weekly meeting and is made up of representatives from each hall. You are encouraged to contact the IRHA Vice-President in order to get on the agenda. Contact information, as well as meeting dates, times, and locations, can be found at http://irha.iastate.edu.
Advertising in the Apartments
Frederiksen Court - You must visit the Frederiksen Court office for posting approval. Each of the 29 Frederiksen Court buildings has a bulletin board located near the mailboxes.
Schilletter University Village (SUV) - You must visit the SUV office in the SUV Community Center (65 Edenburn Dr) for posting approval. SUV has bulletin boards in 64 apartment buildings and the SUV laundry center.
