Mail & Packages

Let's face it - email, texts Twitter and Facebook updates are nice, but nothing beats a letter from a friend or a care package from home.

Residence Hall Mail Delivery

Residence hall mail delivery is managed by the Department of Residence. This includes all United States Postal Service (USPS) mail as well as package delivery services such as DHL, FedEx and UPS. For the security of our residents, individual carriers are prohibited from delivering directly to student rooms.

Each room is assigned a mailbox that all residents of that room will share. Mailbox types vary by area and locks may be either keyed or combination, both of which are distributed at check-in. Mailboxes locations and zip codes are as follows:

Residence Hall Package Delivery

We process a lot of packages – over 52,000 each year! To do this, we need your help, so please keep the following in mind:

  1. Use the correct name and address. We only deliver packages to students who are on our rosters, so the name on the package should be spelled correctly and match what is on the student’s ISU ID card. PLEASE, NO NICKNAMES. Also, please verify that the room number and zip code are correct.
  2. Check your “iastate.edu” email frequently. When we receive a package, we log it into our on-line system, which automatically sends the recipient an e-mail notification. That notification contains a package number and the location of your package. You will need your ISU ID card and your package number to claim your package.
  3. Don’t be fooled by tracking numbers. A tracking number may say a package has made it to campus, but that doesn’t mean it has made it to the recipient’s mail room. It may have been signed for by the University’s main mail room, or the carrier may have dropped it off in the wrong place. It may take 24-48 hours to be routed to the correct location. Watch your email. We’ll let you know as soon as we’ve got it.
  4. Don’t wait until the last minute. If you want someone to get a package in time for their birthday, test, trip, etc., plan ahead and send the items at least 7 days in advance. If you are ordering on-line add at least two days to whatever the company claims as shipping time.
  5. Rethink “Perishables” packages. We are unable  to refrigerate packages. So, while we know how great it is to get fruit, flowers, and home-made treats in the mail, it’s not so great if they’ve gone bad by the time the recipient gets them. A few thoughts: 1. Send items that won’t spoil, 2. Spring for overnight delivery, 3. If you get one of these packages, pick it up ASAP when you get your email package notification – we will specifiy “Perishable” in the message.
