Residence Hall Furniture

The DOR provides furniture in student rooms that is meant for long term use. We ask that you treat it with care so that you and others may enjoy it. Our furniture, like our buildings, varies in type and style. In some halls, furniture is built-in while in others it is free-standing. Some rooms are carpeted; some rooms have tile or wood floors. Beds may be lofted, bunked or "on the floor." Refer to specific hall and house pages for more information.

Typical residence hall furnishings include:

  • One per resident
    • Bed frame and mattress - extra long twin; 36" x 80"
      • Willow & Larch have 2 different bed frame sizes in each room - 36" x 80" & 36" x 76" (both will still have extra long mattresses).
    • Desk and desk chair
    • Wardrobe / Closet
    • Wastebasket
  • One per room
    • Dresser
    • Shower curtain (suite rooms only)
    • Window drapes
    • Futon (Wallace & Wilson only)
    • Micro fridge (Wallace & Wilson only)
      • Total height - 42.5", refrigerator is 2.1 cu. ft., freezer is .7 cu. ft., 700 watts with with power guard (refrigerator/freezer turns off when microwave is in use)

You may bring additional furniture, such as a chair or couch/futon, but space is limited, so you may wish to check with your roommate(s) first. Empty and/or filled kegs are not allowed as room furniture. Waterbeds and hot tubs are not permitted, nor are traffic / street signs without proof of purchase.

Many students choose to maximize the space in their rooms by building lofts. Please refer to our Lofts & Bunks section for details about this option.

Common Area Furniture

Furniture in the common areas is for the use of students of the floor or house and cannot be moved from that common area. Any student who appropriates common-area furniture will be required to return it and may be sanctioned. If common-area furniture is found in a student's room or apartment, the occupants of the residence will be charged accordingly.

Apartment Furniture

As with residence hall furniture, the DOR provides apartment furniture that is meant for long term use. We ask that you treat it with care so that you and others may enjoy it. Décor

When you first walk in to your room / apartment, it is a blank slate waiting to be personalized. Plants, posters, pictures, wall hangings are all welcome. We encourage you to make your space your own, but we have some simple guideline you'll need to follow:

  • No holes. The most common damage charges assessed to residents are for nail / tack holes in walls and adhesive damage from tape. You may hang items using an adhesive such as Sticky Tack or poster putty as long as it does not damage the surface of the wall. To prevent damage to the room and its furnishings, nails, screws, and tacks are not to be used.
  • No painting - unless it is Berkshire White. You may paint your room (except in new or recently renovated buildings) if it was not painted during the summer prior to the current academic year. If your room is in need of painting, the DOR will provide the paint free of charge. Only paint provided by the department may be used. Wall murals are not allowed in student rooms. Contact the Service Center (294-3322) for details.
  • No wallpapering.
  • Nothing on the ceiling. This one is for Wallace Hall only. Nothing should come in contact with the ceiling. This includes posters, stars, lights, cords, tape, lofts, etc.
