House History

GILMAN, Joseph C. (1890-1966) was a graduate of the University of Wisconsin (B.S. 1912, M.S. 1914) and of Washington University (Ph.D. 1915). Before joining the staff at Iowa State in 1918 he was a professor of biology at Ripon College, Wisconsin. He became a full professor of botany in 1934 and acting head of botany 1946-47. He received a Faculty Citation in 1958. He was president of several scientific societies, the Mycological Society of America in 1951-52 being the most important recognition. He authored a Manual of Soil Fungi, many scientific articles and papers and was also editor of the Iowa State College Journal of Science from 1940 to 1948 and associate editor of Phytopathology, 1932-35.
