House History

YOUNG, Mrs. Madge (1891-1953) was a graduate of the University of Illinois and was recognized as a scholar and an active student by being inducted into Phi Beta Kappa (honorary scholarship) and Mortar Board (honorary women's leadership). She was hall director at Roberts Hall from 1939 to 1943 and again from 1946 to 1947. She returned to the campus in 1948 as an assistant at Friley Hall and remained until her death. Two indications of the love and respect that the men had for Mrs. Young were (1) the establishment of the Madge Young Scholarship and (2) a poem published in Sketch in the winter of 1954 that was written by one of the men under her influence and dedicated to her memory.
