House History

HARWOOD, Hazel (1886-1935) a graduate of Vassar College, came to Iowa State from the University of Illinois in 1919 as an advisor to women. She became dean of women in 1921 and remained on the staff until she resigned in 1923. Her first important task at Iowa State was to find room for the increased enrollment of women students, no small task becaue of the lack of residence halls. She also insisted that the names of various houses being used to house women, known as annexes, be changed to cottages. She married Dr. H. E. Bemis of the veterinary surgery department in 1923 and accompanied him to the University of Pennsylvania.
