House History

DAVIDSON, J. B. (1880-1957), the originator of agricultural engineering at Iowa State, received a B.S. degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Nebraska in 1904 and an honorary doctor of engineering from the same University in 1931. He came to Iowa State in 1905 and was professor and head of agricultral engineering from 1919 to 1946. He was the author of many books and won many honors. Among these honors were: The Cyrus Hall McCormick medal for achievement in engineering of agriculture, and elected foreign member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Agriculture, and the Michigan State Centennial Award. He was the first president of the Society of Agricultural engineers. He travelled in both Russia and China as a member of several important American committees. He officially retired from active work in 1956.
