House History

ROWE, Mrs. Louise Huntington (1892-1959) was a graduate of Knox College. She came to Ames in 1940 and served as housemother at the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity for 18 years. She was active in both University and community organizations. A Louise Huntington Rowe Memorial was established as a tribute to her contribution to the professional and cultural development of students. That she cared for students is indicated by: (1) she kept the cigars passed out in the fraternity house when students became engaged with the names of the individuals attached and pasted them on a bulletin board and kept them during the years he was at the house, (2) an article in the Des Moines Tribune described her as the twelfth member of the house football team.
