House History

RICHEY, Harry Wyatt (1890-1947) received a B.S. degree form the University of Nebraska in 1914. He joined the staff of Iowa State that same year as an instructor in horticulture. He went to the University of West Virginia in 1916 for two years, then to the University of Maryland and before returning to Iowa State in 1921 as professor of horticulture he did graduate work at the University of Chicago for one year. Although he gave most of his effort to teaching he did co-author two books in general horticulture. At the occasion of his funeral, Rev. McLaughlin ended his tribute with this paragraph, "Buildings and equipment are necessary parts of Iowa State, but it is the high character of the men and women who teach that really determines the quality and sets the pattern for a school like ours. And Professor Harry Richey did that. He was a good teacher."
