House History

MORTENSEN, Martin (1872-1953) received a B.S. (1909) from Iowa State and a LLD. (1934) from Kansas State College. Previous to his graduation at Iowa State he had attended the Royal Teachers Seminary in Denmark and also held positions in commercial firms. He was made head of dairy industry at Iowa State in 1909 and served until 1938. He retired as head but continued on the staff until his death. His special interests were in butter and ice cream making and in dairy plant management. He received many honors but the outstanding one was awarded in 1950 by the Danish government, The Commanders Cross of the Order of Danneborg. The award come in recognition of a lifetime of outstanding achievement in the dairy industry and especially as a teacher of dairy subjects at Iowa State.
