House History

MACDONALD, Gilmour B. (1883-1960) received three degrees from the University of Nebraska, B.S. (1907), Master of Forestry (1914), and an honorary Doctor of Agriculture (1947). He joined the Iowa State staff in 1910 as assistant professor of forestry. When forestry was separated from the department of horticulture in 1946 he became its first head. He retired as an administrative head in 1948 but remained on the staff. He had an intense interest in forestry and conservation and received a Distinguished Service Award from the Society of the American Forest Association in 1955. He was active in community affairs and the American Forestry Association spoke of him as "one of the most beloved teachers of forestry in the United States".
