SCHMIDT, Louis Bernard (1879-1963) a well known figure on the Iowa State Campus for 50 years was a 1901 graduate of Cornell College. He also received an honorary doctorate from the school in 1934. He did graduate work at Chicago, Iowa and Wisconsin. He joined the Iowa State staff in 1906 and served as professor and head of history from 1930 to 1945. He was a very active person, an author of over 100 papers, a member of many honorary and professional societies, a member of many University committees, one of which, in 1913, recommended the establishment of a music department. He probably is best noted for papers on the history of American agriculture and he was the first to introduce a course on the history of American Agriculture.
