House History

NELSON, P. Mabel (1887-1963) was a 1915 graduate of the University of California, who received a master's degree there in 1916 and a PhD. from Yale University in 1923. She served as dean of what was then the College of Home Economics at Iowa State from 1944 to 1952. She came to the staff in 1923 and in 1926 became head of the department of foods and nutrition. She pioneered in subjects such as experimental cookery and research in home economics. She was the author of numerous professional papers and co-author of a laboratory manual. She was chairman of the first cooperative project in six mid-western states studying the nutritional status of college women. She was a member of many honorary and professional scientific societies.
