Frederiksen Court Community Center Closing for Renovations This Summer

AMES, Iowa— The Frederiksen Court Community Center and Hawthorn Market & Café will be closed this summer due to renovations. The renovations will begin in May and the community center, along with an updated Hawthorn Market & Café, is scheduled to reopen in August prior to the start of the Fall 2011 semester.

The renovation will see an expansion of the current Frederiksen Court staff offices. The offices will now be more accessible for individuals with handicaps. The expansion will also allow the Frederiksen Court graduate student to have an office with administrative staff.

“With our graduate student moving in and our offices expanding, this renovation will help us provide better service to our residents,” said Frederiksen Court Apartment Community Director Mary Beth Golemo.

In addition to the new office structure, returning students will immediately recognize at least one advantage upon the completion of the renovation. Hawthorn Market & Café will be gated on the south side, allowing for a hallway to be created that will allow students access to the community center lounge area 24 hours each day, 7 days each week.

“It was important to the students that they have 24/7 access to the lounge,” said ISU Dining Director Nancy Levandowski. “We knew when we started discussing this renovation that we needed to make that a priority.”

In addition to 24 hour access to the lounge, new ordering kiosks will be installed to eliminate congestion in the servery area and to improve the speed of service. The kiosks will allow customers to place their order before they enter the servery. A self-serve one-time thru buffet will be located on the south side of the servery area. Additional frozen storage, equipment upgrades, and other back of the house and work space adjustments will create more efficient service for customers.

“Customers will find their experience easier to navigate and will receive quicker speed of service,” said Kristi Patel, Assistant Director for Retail Operations. “They can expect to see new items this fall, including a new pizza concept, Starbucks Frappuccinos®, and toasted subs as well as expanded dinner offerings.”

While the renovations are occurring, Frederiksen Court staff will be moving to 4216 Frederiksen Court. Check-ins, check-outs, and general resident assistance will be handled through the temporary office location.

In addition to Hawthorn Market & Café, summer residents will not have access to the fitness center, ATM, computers and printers, or meeting spaces. Frederiksen Court staff are encouraging residents to take advantage of similar amenities on campus, including Lied Recreation Athletic Center and Parks Library. ISU Dining staff are reminding residents that their Dining Dollar$ and meals can be used at other locations on campus during the summer. Residents can check the ISU Dining website for detailed information related to hours and menus.
