Fall 2012 Move-In Process

The exact move-in process you will go through when you arrive depends on your assignment. Select one of the following links for specific information: Residence Hall Move-In, On-Campus Apartment Move-In

Residence Hall Move-In

  • New Student Move-In = Tues., Aug. 14 and Wed., Aug. 15 - based on your room number
  • Returning Student Move-In = Thurs., August 16

Please note that these dates are when your move-in BEGINS. Move-in continues through the first day of classes. Also, move-in will not start earlier on these days than is advertised. So you don’t need to arrive early to "beat the rush".

If you arrive prior to your scheduled mone-in date, you will likely be charged for Early Arrival.

A NOTE ON TRAFFIC: During move-in, on-campus traffic is routed in specific directions in and around each residential area. Street signs will be displayed and volunteers will be directing traffic within parking lots. Traffic can be fairly heavy at times, but the system works smoothly with everyone's patience and cooperation.

  • Step One: Get Parked
    • New Students = You will receive a parking pass in the mail prior to arriving on campus. Prior to coming to campus, fill your pass out and keep it handy. DON'T PACK IT!
      • If you lose your pass or change your move-in day - don't worry. We'll have extras when you get here. The parking pass is only needed  Aug. 14 and 15. If you are moving in any other day, you do not need a special pass.
      • At the entrance of your building's parking lot you will be greeted by a traffic coordinator who will ask for your parking pass and will fill out your designated move-in time limit. Once the traffic coordinator gives your parking pass back to you, place it on your dashboard and enter the lot.
      • You will have 30 minutes to check-in and unload your items. When your time expires, we ask that you be kind to others and move your vehicle to long-term parking (maps will be provided at move-in).
    • Returning Students = You know the drill. When you get here, find a parking spot near your building, check-in, and - as a courtesy to others - move your car to the stadium lot when you are finished unloading.

On-Campus Apartment Move-In = Saturday, August 11

Please note that this is the date that move-in BEGINS. Move-in continues through the first day of classes.

  • Step One: Check-In and Get Your Keys
    • Frederiksen Court Residents = When you arrive, go to the Frederiksen Court Community Center. Staff will verify your apartment assignment and issue your keys.
    • Schilletter & University Village Residents = When you arrive, go to the SUV Community Center. Staff will verify your assignment and issue your keys.
  • Step Two Unload and Move-In
    • Once you have received your keys, you can start moving your stuff into your apartment. To make the process go as quickly as possible, get your things into the apartment before unpacking and deciding where it should go.
    • When you have finished unloading your behicle, if you are in a parking spot very close to your building, it would a nice gesture for your neighbors if you would move to a space farther from the building so they don't have to carry things as far.
  • Step Three: Inspect Your Apartment
    • When you get your keys, you will also receive an Apartment Condition and Inventory Report form. Please take the time to be thorough in your inspection of your apartment and then return the form to the Community Center office within 48 hours.
      • When you move out, we will reinspect your apartment and we will use your move-in Apartment Condition and Inventory Report form as our basis for taking inventory of furnishings, evaluating cleanliness, identifying damages and assessing charges.
    • Find something in your apartment that needs fixed? Make a note of it on your Apartment Condition and Inventory Report form. You must also submit a Service Request. Staff will be happy to show you how to do this.
  • Step Four: Get Comfortable
    • Unpack, meet your roommate, set up your apartment, meet your neighbors, say goodbye to your family, etc. Have questions? Your CA will be your best resource for information as you settle in.
      • Frederiksen Court Residents can also visit the Frederiksen Court office to ask questions or check out any tools/supplies you may need to set up your apartment.
      • Schilletter & University Village Residents can also visit the SUV Community Center Office.
    • New Students = Don’t forget to go to Destination Iowa State (DIS). This is a valuable program for you to participate in, so make sure you check out the DIS schedule.
