Student Employment Opportunities

Employment opportunities are plentiful in the Department of Residence. In addition to offering numerous fulltime and professional positions, the department is the largest employer of students at Iowa State University. Student staff positions are varied and include: community advisors, community advisors/ FC, resident managers, conference managers and summer Conference Staff, as well as administrative positions, hall desk positions, maintenance and dining positions. Working as a student staff member provides a great opportunity to earn extra cash and develop life-long skills.

Community Advisors (CAs)

Community Advisors/FC
Frederiksen Court community advisors (CAs) provide leadership and help to build community for our 23 apartment buildings and near 2000 residents. Every 2-3 buildings have a live-in CA who serves as a resource for the residents in their "cluster." Frederiksen CAs also enforce regulations and policies as well as play integral role in facilities management. Resident Managers
A resident manager is a live-in, part-time staff member in University Apartments responsible for welcoming new residents, planning, organizing and advertising and staff community-wide and neighborhood programming. To apply for a resident manager position, contact the SUV Office at 294-5360.
Summer Conference Staff (SCS)
Summer conference staff are responsible for providing front-line quality service to adult and youth guests living in the Department of Residence Summer Conference housing areas. The position requires a flexible person who likes the opportunity to learn and use new skills daily, enjoys helping people, and wants to be an active and supportive team member. These positions provide a fun learning experience for students of any major! Salary includes a meal plan and optional housing at Frederiksen Court with other staff.

Conference Managers (CMs)
We look for enthusiastic, customer-oriented, and dedicated conference managers to coordinate delivery of housing and dining services to summer conference groups living in ISU residence halls. CMs assist with the selection, training, and supervision of 22+ student summer staff. Hours are part-time in the spring and full-time in the summer. These positions provide a great experience and possible internship opportunities for students of any major, particularly those in HRIM, Marketing, Business, MIS, and others!

Administrative Positions
Student office positions are available at the Department of Residence administrative office, The Department of Residence payroll office, the Schilletter/University Village (SUV) administrative office, and the Frederiksen Court administrative office. As a student office assistant you are a very important part of our team. You will often be the first contact a person has with The Department of Residence, and it is very important for this impression to be a positive one. These positions provide an opportunity to meet new people daily and develop initiative, assertiveness, responsibility, and leadership.
Desk Assistant Job
A desk assistant provides information, mail services, and supportive administrative assistance to all residents. These functions are varied and extensive. Some responsibilities include: to act as a resource person with knowledge about Iowa State University, as well as the residence hall activities, groups, meeting places, and offices; to sort and distribute letters, packages, and special deliveries to residents; to manage hall desk monies and the sale of stamps and various other supplies; to handle student room, access and bathroom key checkout and replacement; to checkout tools, movies, games and various other intramural equipment; and to deal with complaints as they may relate to the hall desk or residence hall system in general. A desk assistant also works closely with a staff of fellow hall desk employees and the hall desk supervisor to develop a cohesive team that serves the residents.
