The Position

“One of my favorite parts of the hall director position at ISU is that my days are never the same. I have the opportunity to do so many different things each day/week/semester and it is impossible to become bored or complacent. It is really awesome that the department supports us to make each residence hall community unique and fit the needs of the students who live here. I also really love the students that I have the opportunity to work with. They are what make this job worthwhile and fun. I get to have great conversations every day about everything from academic pursuits to favorite TV shows. There is not a day that goes by that I am not excited to go to work.” - Kate Garrett, Willow Hall Director

“I enjoy my position at Iowa State for many reasons. The flexibility and autonomy that we are awarded as Hall Directors is great. I can do my job the way that fits my style and also the personality of my building, which may not be like my colleagues. I am also able to pursue my interests in the position and around campus. I have been able to work outside of the department on several committees and to teach, which is a huge asset to not only my professional development but also working with students on a grander level. It is a rewarding position because of the people you work with-both students and colleagues alike. I love that every day presents its own challenges and opportunities to learn.” - Stephanie Whitener, Upper Friley Hall Director

“Being a Hall Director is exciting because I get to do a variety of work and develop in multiple areas! I am gaining experience with educational programming, a variety of administrative tasks, conduct hearings, mental health, crisis counseling, staff supervision, student organizations, department committees and more. Being a Hall Director is rewarding, for every day I get to work closely with students. Residents come to me with a variety of issues, and I get to help them find the answers, solve those issues, and grow. Other aspects of the position that I really appreciate are the department’s commitment to diversity, professional development funds that each Hall Director gets, the opportunity to teach a course, and my AMAZING co-workers. The Hall Director team and Department of Residence in general are all about sharing and helping each other be successful. The support here is awesome; we have a lot of fun!” - Noelle Weber, Oak-Elm Hall Director
