The Community

“The first thing that struck me when I moved here in 2006 was the friendliness of the people, and that factor has remained consistent. It's not a large city, but bigger than where I came from, and I didn't expect to find such friendly, helpful people. That's exactly what I did find, though, and I've made some great friends here. I enjoy attending concerts and other performances at Stephens Auditorium and Hilton, attending athletic events, riding the bike trails, and visiting the coffee shops, restaurants, and small shops downtown.” - Cindy Sheehy, Martin Hall Director

“Ames has truly become my home while working at Iowa State University. There are so many opportunities to become involved and/or volunteer and network with young professionals at the University and other businesses in the community. Much of my free time is spent in the Ames community at various local restaurants, coffee shops, attending sporting events, playing recreational team sports, etc. Des Moines is not a far and I spend many weekends and days taking in the sights and sounds of Des Moines. There are live music performances, Broadway shows, sporting events, large farmers market, shopping, etc. There is rarely a moment in which I cannot find something to participate in throughout the Ames/Des Moines area. Ames has truly been a great place to live and work.” – Linda Garbisch, Larch Hall Director

"The thing I love about Ames is that it has a little bit of everything. Not only can I choose from a variety of great local restaurants, but Des Moines is just a very short trip down the road. Ames also has a thriving community to get involved with including the Young Professionals of Ames, Jaycees, Ames on the Half Shell Concert Series, Ames Cyclone Country Kennel Club, and a wide array of  spiritual and religious locations, just to name a few. We have a nice mall in town, with the state’s largest mall just 45 minutes away. It’s a small town with plenty of room to meet new people, get involved, and find what you need with many more options just down the road!” - Lona Davenport, Helser Hall Director
